Singapore, 21 March 2016 – Following on from the successful launch of the new Passat sedan in Singapore last year, Volkswagen is now adding the Passat Variant to the model line-up.

Everything about the European ‘Car of the Year 2015’ award winner is new – its design, technologies, engines and possibilities. Like the sedan, the Passat Variant was created based on the modular transverse matrix – thanks to this platform, its proportions were made to be significantly more dynamic and its overall package was improved.

Exterior design

Volkswagen has made an estate car with clarity and power that cross over into a higher class. The Passat Variant has won a Red Dot Design Award for its outstanding design. While preserving all of its functional virtues, the car has gained noticeably in presence, exclusivity and dynamism. Even at night it has an unmistakable look due to its newly developed LED headlights and standard LED rear lights.

The standard R-Line exterior styling package includes R-Line bumpers in a striking, sporty look, a dedicated radiator grille with R-Line logo, side sill extensions, a roof edge spoiler, a black gloss diffuser and 19-inch alloy wheels with 235/40 R19 tyres.

A love for detail is a common thread that runs right through the Passat Variant. One example is found at the rear: the trapezoidal chrome trim panels that are integrated to be flush with the rear bumper. The rear reflectors – trapezoidal like the tailpipes – were also worked into the bumper in an extremely precise fashion. These small yet refined details are what set the car apart on the road.

The interplay of lines and light surfaces on the body also significantly lowers the height of the new Passat Variant visually – it looks much lower than it really is. But despite its athletic appearance and weight reduction of up to 85 kg, there has been a significant gain in body rigidity of 2,000 Nm per degree, to 25,000 Nm per degree. The extremely stiff body has many benefits, from handling and ride comfort to quietness and safety.

Unsurpassed practicality

Compared to the previous model, the luggage space of the Passat Variant has been increased by 47 litres to 650 litres; when the boot space is filled to the roof, cargo capacity grows to 1,780 litres. Not only is the loading bay spacious, it’s also easily configurable with its variable load floor and the multitude of storage compartments for smaller items. Both the tailgate and luggage cover are electrically operated,so they can be usedeffortlessly.

The designers placed special value on a driver-oriented design and a very spacious feeling for the front interiorarea. Therefore, starting from the driver’s seating position, the dashboard builds upwards in the space to the two sides of the instruments, inclined slightly towards the windscreen. This creates a spacious feeling as well as an ideal ergonomic environment. Front electric seats are standard, with the 14-way adjustable ergoComfort driver’s seat providing excellent support even on very long journeys.

The latest innovations

ThenewActive Info Display comes as standard on the Passat Variant. All instruments are implemented virtually by software. For example, navigation information can be displayed between the rev counter and the speedometer as a map in 2D or 3D. In this case, the round instruments are relocated to the side to make more room for the map display. Information on driving and assistance functions can be integrated into the graphic areas of the speedometer and rev counter as needed.

Data that can be displayed on the centre console via the infotainment system (e.g. phone contact images or CD covers), can also be shown in the Active Info Display. The display is 12.3 inches in size and its resolution of 1,440 x 540 pixels enables an extremely precise display with high-quality graphics.

The Passat Variant also has the latest connectivity features on board. The ‘Discover Pro’ navigation system comes with App-Connect, which makes it possible to integrate numerous smartphone apps or functions into the infotainment system. It works with the MirrorLink, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay services. In addition, the ‘Dynaudio Confidence’ sound system with a total power output of 700 wattsguarantees the best possible audio quality.

Another new feature is the camera-based surroundings visualisation system, Area View. Itwas developed to enable a 360-degree overview of the close surroundings and traffic situation. Area View utilises four cameras located in the tailgate (1), door mirrors (2) and radiator grille (1). With an viewing angle of more than 180 degrees per camera, Area View captures the entiresurroundings and projects this onto the screen of the infotainment system.

On the display, the driver can select the camera views (front, rear, side or bird’s eye view) as either a full or split screen. The system permits a total of 17 different virtualcamera positions, which are arranged so that all conceivable perspectives can be displayed around the vehicle.

High performance drivetrain

Underneath the bonnet of the Passat Variant is a 2.0 TSI engine with 220 PS. Itsmaximum torque output of 350 Nm is available from 1,500 to 4,400 rpm. Combined with the quick-shifting 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG), the car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in only 6.9 seconds, and reaches a top speed of 244 km/h.Despite this, it has extremely low fuel consumption of 6.5 L/100km in the combined driving cycle.

The Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) system offers three driving modes: ‘Comfort’, ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’. In the ‘Sport’ mode, a very agilestyle of driving is implemented, while the ‘Comfort’ mode makes riding in the Passat Variant exceptionallycomfortable.Via the driver profile selector it is also possible in the ‘Individual’ profile to assignany other driving profile properties to the DCC mode.
